I had a thalamic stroke patient that had issues with his sensation, balance and gait. I would normally visit him at his home for physiotherapy, therefore, our physio session can be quite limited in terms of resources.
I came up with an idea of making rehabilitation inexpensive and interesting. Having been exposed to the wonders of Nintendo Wii Fit and its balance board during my diploma days, I was inspired to be innovative. I wanted to capture my patient’s attention and to increase his engagement during rehab. So, I innovated a normal wobble board into a virtual reality wobble board. The things that I used were a wobble board, a smartphone and a smart TV.
With everything set up, my patient was able to enjoy his rehabilitation session without getting too bored. Some of the activities done were trying to keep his balance on the wobble board with auditory and visual feedback and of course some games.
