Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy is the application of small electrical impulses to the nerves and musculoskeletal system. It has widespread applicability for the treatment of orthopedic conditions and varied indications, although its application is typically for pain control, increasing sensation and muscle re-education.
There are several different forms of electrotherapy; these include interferential therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), and functional electrical stimulation.
Interferential therapy and TENS reduce pain by manipulating the nerves through our body's own natural morphine system which reduces the sensation of pain and produces a tingling feeling.
